Industry at a glance:
- For the year 2018-19, Australia’s apple industry was valued at $513 million, while the pear industry was valued at around $78 million.
- There are over 500 commercial apple and/or pear growers in the country. All states produce apples and Victoria is the largest pear producer, with around 90 per cent of the nation’s pears grown there.
- In 2018-19, Australians ate an average of 10kg of apples per year which amounts to more than one apple a week, and they eat around 2.3kg of pears a year, which is about one a month.
- Australia currently exports 1-2 per cent of our total marketable production of apples and 8 per cent of pears.
