Creating a better future for Australian apple and pear growers,
through industry leadership and commercial advancement.

Australia’s reputation for premium fruit and orchard productivity is globally established. To unlock the next wave of value and ensure a more profitable future, the apple and pear industry must work to improve its commercial practices.

Launched in 2019 as a companion to the highly successful Future Orchards program, Future Business’ priorities, are to harmonise supply chains, improve procurement practices, promote risk management and support data-driven decision making. These types of sound business management practices will help to transform the long-term outlook of the apple and pear industry.

Owned and delivered by APAL, the Future Business offering will be guided by members’ needs and offers a range of services and training programs, including tools and templates, risk workshops and commercial advice to assist planning, capture data and improve efficiencies that will increase competitiveness.

Discretionary Mutual Fund

With conventional insurance premiums increasing sharply each year, a Discretionary Mutual Fund (DMF) could be an alternative to traditional insurance.

A preliminary study has shown that managing industry risks through a DMF is feasible, but will need broader industry commitment to achieve the scale required. Justin Niven from KJ Risk Group said that a DMF offered a long-term opportunity to both reduce costs through the sharing of risk and incentivise better risk management but it would need at least $20 million in annual premiums to be viable.

“We would need five times the number of growers who participated in the feasibility study to get it off the ground,” he said.

There are also group buying and workers compensation opportunities available for industry members. Please submit an expression of interest to let the team know you’re interested to participate and a representative from AB Phillips will be in contact with you.
