WA – Soil Your Undies!

Western Australian growers joined the Soil Your Undies campaign by burying cotton undies in orchards across the region in early September, and it’s almost time to do the unveiling!
Pomewest’s Susie Murphy-White got out and about with local growers to dig undies into soils so that they could see for themselves how active the soil biology is within their orchards.
Pomewest is a partner of the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture’s PIPS3 Program project, Improved Australian apple and pear orchards soil health and plant nutrition project (AP19006), hosting one of the soil health trial sites at Manjimup, WA. The treatments being trialled and assessed for their impact upon soil health (biological, chemical & physical properties), fruit yield and quality, and profitability outcomes include: a mushroom compost and legume/grass mix planted under the tree-line and green manure mix, native mix and planted flowering meadow mix planted within inter-rows.
These are being compared with the grower’s own practice of inter-row permanent grass sward and weed spray strip under-tree.
