Striving for quality
July 2015 | Grower case-study presentation by Fankhauser Apples | Future Orchards®
This Future Orchards® grower presentation focuses on the management discipline required to produce consistently high-quality fruit. Rather than treating quality as a packing-shed outcome, the resource frames it as the result of decisions made throughout the orchard season: canopy management, crop load, nutrition, water, fruit exposure and timing all contribute to the final packout.
The case-study format is valuable because it links technical choices with commercial outcomes. High yields only create value when fruit meets the size, colour and quality requirements of the intended market. This means orchard targets need to be defined early and translated into practical actions that can be checked during the season.
The presentation also reflects the broader Future Orchards® emphasis on simplification and repeatability. Systems that make it easier for staff to prune, thin and harvest consistently can reduce variability between trees and blocks and improve the proportion of fruit that reaches the preferred grade.
For growers, the resource is best used as a prompt to examine how each orchard operation contributes to marketable yield. The objective is not simply more fruit, but more fruit in the specification that delivers the strongest sustainable return.
