Root pruning at Mt Lofty, South Australia
2014 | Paul James, Rural Solutions | Future Orchards® trial report
This Future Orchards® trial at Mt Lofty evaluated root pruning, or root ripping, as a way to restrain excessive vegetative growth in established apple trees. The work was undertaken in a commercial orchard setting so the treatment could be judged against practical orchard-management objectives rather than only tree-growth measurements.
The report focuses on the balance between vigour control and maintaining productive capacity. Root pruning can reduce the tree’s access to water and nutrients for a period, slowing shoot extension and opening the canopy. For growers, the potential benefits include better light distribution, improved fruit exposure and reduced labour required for summer pruning or other corrective canopy work.
The trial is best read as part of the wider Future Orchards® program on vigour management, which compared physical, chemical and pruning-based approaches. It provides an on-farm example of when root pruning may be appropriate and the need to match treatment severity to tree vigour, soil conditions and seasonal risk.
