2019 | Future Orchards® Orange Focus Orchard trial | Young Kanzi pruning

This Orange Focus Orchard trial compares two approaches to pruning young Kanzi trees during canopy establishment. The block at Stoneleigh was planted in 2017 on M9, and the trial compared trees that were poled back with trees where selected branches were retained at the end of first leaf.

The objective was to understand how early pruning decisions influence canopy fill, branch development and the speed at which a young high-density orchard reaches productive structure. Aggressive heading can simplify the tree but may delay canopy development, while retaining suitable branches can preserve early fruiting area if vigour and position are appropriate.

The trial is particularly relevant to new orchard establishment because the first few seasons determine the eventual balance between leader growth, branch quality and early cropping. The resource encourages growers to assess young-tree pruning in terms of canopy targets rather than habit or tradition.

The report forms part of the Future Orchards® Focus Orchard program, where commercial blocks were used to test practical management options and track their effects over multiple seasons.
