Pear Masterclass – Profitable pears
June 2018 | Presented by Ian Goodwin | Future Orchards® Pear Masterclass
Ian Goodwin examines the factors that underpin profitable pear production, placing orchard performance in the context of yield, fruit quality, water use, canopy management and the economics of the production system. The presentation encourages growers to think in terms of marketable output rather than simply total tonnes.
Profitable pear blocks require an orchard structure that can intercept light efficiently, carry an appropriate crop and deliver consistent fruit size and quality. Irrigation, nutrition, pruning and crop load need to be coordinated because over-vigour or inconsistent cropping can reduce both productivity and packout.
The presentation is useful for benchmarking because it links biological performance with business outcomes. It supports the wider Future Orchards® approach of setting measurable targets, monitoring whether the block is on track, and changing management when yield, quality or efficiency falls short.
