Orchard walk: Huon Valley, September 2006
September 2006 | Future Orchards® orchard walk | Huon Valley, Tasmania
This Future Orchards® resource records the September 2006 Huon Valley orchard walk and includes a technical summary of intensive apple growing systems from the Grove Research Station demonstration orchard in Tasmania. The work was presented by Predo Jotic and Michael Oakford of the Department of Primary Industries and Water, Tasmania.
The demonstration orchard was established in September 2000 to help growers plan and develop modern, efficient orchard systems. It compared Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady and Sundowner across dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks and tree densities ranging from 1,904 to 6,666 trees per hectare, with emphasis on early production, canopy development, tree quality and orchard establishment costs.
The resource highlights the importance of matching higher establishment inputs with early yield. It reports strong early production in several high-density combinations and reinforces the value of high-quality nursery trees, dwarfing rootstocks, minimal pruning and training systems that rapidly create productive fruiting canopy. The document also discusses establishment and training costs, integrated fruit production and practical methods such as scoring and branch positioning to develop young trees.
