Orchard management and production

July 2015 | Ross Wilson, AgFirst NZ | presentation and notes

This Future Orchards® resource focuses on orchard density and canopy design in 2015 and beyond. It brings the subject into a practical orchard-management context, with attention to measurable production, fruit-quality and business outcomes rather than treating the topic as an isolated technical exercise.

Ross Wilson explains that successful canopy systems can differ between regions, but they share common fundamentals: a calm mature tree, good precocity and yield efficiency, canopy fill within about five years, at least 65% interception of available light and good light distribution through the canopy. He also argues that the density/rootstock/canopy combination must make economic sense, citing an internal rate of return above 15% as a useful benchmark.

For growers, the resource is most useful as a decision-support reference: combine the technical principles with local block data, site conditions, labour constraints and market requirements, then monitor whether the chosen strategy improves consistency and profitability over time.
