Crop load and growth management

June 2013 | AgFirst | Future Orchards® case study

The Mount View case study documents a commercial root-pruning trial undertaken to assess whether restricting roots can help control excessive tree vigour.

The treatment is evaluated in the context of orchard balance: shoot growth, canopy density, fruiting and the practical consequences of applying a mechanical root restriction beside the tree row.

Root pruning can be useful where other management settings still produce excessive vegetative growth, but the case study reinforces that treatment severity and timing must be considered alongside soil moisture, rootstock, crop load and tree health.

This resource complements the broader 2013 Future Orchards® root-pruning trial report by showing the technique in a specific orchard setting.
