June 2017 | Susie Murphy White | Future Orchards® Western Australia trial demonstration

This Future Orchards® demonstration examines leaf defoliation as a management tool in Western Australian apple production. The resource is framed as a practical orchard demonstration rather than a fully controlled research experiment, allowing growers to observe the treatment under local commercial conditions.

Defoliation can influence the timing and uniformity of dormancy, bud development and subsequent flowering, which makes it particularly relevant in lower-chill production environments. The demonstration provides a way to compare treated and untreated trees and to observe whether the practice produces a useful management response without creating unacceptable impacts on tree health or crop development.

The main value of the report is its trial mindset: define the management objective, apply a clearly described treatment, record the response and assess whether the effect is large and consistent enough to justify adoption. Growers considering defoliation should interpret the result in the context of cultivar, local chill accumulation, tree condition and the timing of treatment.
