Orchard management and production

June 2013 | AgFirst | Future Orchards® case study

The Jilba pruning case study documents the application of simple pruning rules in a commercial orchard and examines whether a more disciplined, repeatable pruning approach can improve tree uniformity and performance.

The work sits within the Future Orchards® focus on translating canopy-management theory into block-level practice. Rather than relying on individual pruner judgement alone, the case study uses defined rules for branch removal, tree shape, vigour control and retention of useful fruiting wood.

The approach is intended to improve consistency between trees and between workers, making later crop-load management easier and supporting better light distribution through the canopy.

For growers, the case study provides a practical example of how pruning can be treated as a managed production system with observable targets rather than a purely seasonal maintenance task.
