Influences on fruit quality
April 2019 | Presented by Robert Wiedmer, South Tyrolean Extension Service for Fruit- and Winegrowing | Future Orchards® Northern Loop
Robert Wiedmer draws on South Tyrol’s intensive apple industry to explain how fruit quality is shaped by management across the whole season. He defines quality in commercial terms including size, colour, storability, shelf life and flavour, then traces the orchard decisions that influence those outcomes.
The presentation covers winter pruning, fertilisation, chemical thinning, hand thinning, irrigation and harvest management. South Tyrol’s tall slender spindle systems on M9, typically planted at high tree densities, are used to illustrate the importance of a slim, well-lit canopy and consistent tree structure.
Nutrition is treated as a balance between supporting crop and avoiding excess vegetative growth, with nitrogen highlighted as a key element whose requirement depends on soil, expected yield, shoot growth, variety and pruning style. Thinning and irrigation are similarly linked to achieving the desired crop load and fruit-size profile without sacrificing colour or storage quality.
The presentation is valuable as an international benchmark, showing how detailed orchard management and extension support are combined in a high-density production region to pursue consistent fruit quality.
