September 2020 | Camilla Humphries, E.E. Muir | Future Orchards® Victorian trial report

This final report documents a Victorian Focus Orchard trial investigating heat mitigation. Extreme heat can affect tree function, fruit finish and fruit quality, so practical methods that reduce heat load are of direct interest to orchard managers in vulnerable seasons.

The trial is framed as an on-farm comparison rather than a laboratory study. Its value lies in testing mitigation options under commercial orchard conditions and recording how the orchard and fruit responded during periods of high temperature.

When reviewing the report, growers should consider the orchard system, canopy, irrigation capacity, local weather and timing of the mitigation treatment. These factors influence whether a strategy can be transferred successfully from one block or region to another.

The report contributes to the broader Future Orchards® focus on climate-risk management by turning a seasonal production risk into a measurable management question that can be assessed on-farm.
