Irrigation and water

October 2002 | Dr Anne-Maree Boland, Angelika Ziehrl and Jennifer Beaumont | Guide to Best Practice in Water Management – Orchard Crops

This comprehensive guide was produced to support better irrigation management in orchard crops. Although it was later distributed through the Future Orchards® library, the source itself is the First Edition published in October 2002 by the Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment with the Murray-Darling Basin Commission.

The publication provides a structured reference for estimating crop water requirements, understanding soils and root zones, selecting and operating irrigation systems, monitoring water status and improving water-use efficiency. It is designed to help orchard managers connect irrigation decisions with plant performance rather than treating water application as a fixed calendar task.

A central theme is measurement: growers need to understand how much water the crop requires, how much the system applies, where that water moves in the soil profile and whether plant response indicates stress or excess. These principles remain relevant when using newer sensor technologies because they provide the agronomic framework for interpreting data.

The guide is a substantial background resource for growers developing or reviewing an orchard water-management program and complements later Future Orchards case studies and water-budget tools.
