Focus Orchard update No. 4: Reviewing successes and failures
December 2013 / January 2014 | Ross Wilson, AgFirst | Australian Fruitgrower article
This fourth Focus Orchard update reviews progress by looking deliberately at both successes and failures. That framing is central to the Future Orchards® approach: a trial is useful when it improves a management decision, even if the original treatment does not deliver the expected result.
The article encourages growers to compare outcomes with the target set at the start of the season. Yield, fruit size, colour, packout, tree growth and labour requirements all need to be considered together when deciding whether a change should be repeated or modified.
Reviewing unsuccessful outcomes is especially important in orchard systems because the response may be influenced by crop load, weather, tree vigour, timing and block history. Recording these interactions helps prevent the same mistake being repeated and strengthens future trial design.
As part of the numbered Focus Orchard series, this article marks the shift from simply implementing changes to critically reviewing the evidence and using it to set the next round of orchard priorities.
