June 2014 | Ross Wilson and Craig Hornblow, AgFirst | Future Orchards® presentation

This presentation summarises key learnings from the first major period of Focus Orchard activity between 2012 and 2014. The program used selected commercial orchards as intensive learning sites where performance could be measured, constraints identified and management changes demonstrated to other growers.

A central lesson of the Focus Orchard model is that performance improvement starts with good baseline information. Orchard measurements, block observations and business data make it easier to separate symptoms from the real limiting factor and to set targets that can be checked at the end of the season.

The presentation also reinforces the importance of local trials. A practice that works in one orchard may need modification elsewhere because of variety, rootstock, canopy, soil, climate or labour system differences.

For growers and advisers, this retrospective resource is useful for understanding how the Focus Orchard concept evolved from demonstration blocks into a structured extension method built around measurement, peer discussion and repeated review.
