February 2021 | Steve Spark, AgFirst | Future Orchards® Focus Orchard and trial update

This regional update covers current Focus Orchard and trial work in Western Australia and South Australia. The title highlights two practical themes: using bud dissection to better understand floral potential and managing excessive vigour in the upper parts of orchard canopies.

Bud dissection can help growers assess reproductive potential before the season is fully expressed in the orchard. Used carefully, it adds another piece of information to pruning, crop-load and thinning decisions rather than replacing field observation and historical block knowledge.

Vigour control in canopy tops is closely linked to light distribution, fruiting balance and labour efficiency. The update places these questions in a commercial-orchard setting, where any management change needs to improve canopy function without sacrificing productive wood or fruit quality.

The report is part of the Future Orchards® regional extension series and is useful for growers comparing how WA and SA orchards approached crop potential and canopy balance in the 2020-21 season.
