Data and insights

March 2008 | Prepared by AgFirst | Future Orchards® Cripps Pink Monitor Block analysis

This Future Orchards® resource brings together Monitor Block data for Cripps Pink and coloured strains to examine how tree age, tree density, trunk cross-sectional area (TCA), specific crop load and yield interact. The analysis first looks at individual-tree performance, then converts the information to a per-hectare basis and finishes with case studies of stronger-performing blocks.

The data show that high-density trees began cropping earlier, commonly in year two, while medium-density trees generally began in year three. Tree-level production continued to rise as orchards aged, but the analysis also found a very wide spread in yield between blocks of the same age, demonstrating that age alone does not explain orchard performance.

The resource is valuable because it turns a large set of block observations into practical benchmarks. Growers can compare planting density, tree size, specific crop load and yield against the wider dataset and use the differences to identify where canopy development, crop load or other management factors may be limiting performance.
