June 2013 | Future Orchards® South Australia trial report

This South Australian trial focused on the growth of young Kanzi® trees and the practical challenge of developing productive canopy quickly after planting. Young-tree performance was a major theme in the Future Orchards® demonstration program because delayed canopy fill postpones meaningful yields and reduces the return on establishment investment.

The trial sits alongside other program work on crop load, replant management, gibberellic acid and nutrition. The key question is whether a practical intervention changes extension growth and canopy development enough to justify the additional cost and management effort under commercial conditions.

For growers, the report is most useful when read as part of the wider young-tree establishment evidence from the program. Future Orchards® repeatedly found that no single input substitutes for good site preparation, irrigation, nutrition, training and crop-load management. Measurements such as leader extension, shoot growth and canopy fill are therefore central to judging progress toward the orchard’s target structure.
