Attention all orchardists in the Goulburn Valley region! The Fruit Fly Area Wide Management Program wants to remind you of the continuous effort required to combat Queensland fruit fly, even during the winter season.

While the cold weather poses challenges for these pests, they can still survive by seeking refuge in warm spots across the landscape, such as evergreen tree foliage, houses, and buildings.

Penny Aston, the Program’s Acting Regional Coordinator, emphasises the significance of fruit fly awareness and taking preventive measures throughout the year for those with fruit trees or vegetable patches.

‘Fruit flies able to endure winter through warm shelter will be responsible for a population surge in spring, making it crucial to maintain ongoing efforts during winter,’ Penny explained.

‘Mismanagement of fallen fruit in orchards and neglected fruit trees in property backyards has contributed to population explosions in several areas this season. Therefore, the program urges both operational and non-operational orchards in the region to enhance their vigilance in fruit fly management on their premises.’

The monitoring area encompasses the Berrigan Shire Council, which collaborates in the fruit fly program. Support is readily available through the program to assist gardeners, property owners, and growers in enhancing their understanding of various fruit fly control methods.
