Crop load and growth management

November 2011 | Presented by AgFirst | Future Orchards® webinar

Variation in flowering is a practical Future Orchards® webinar focused on one of the key sources of inconsistency in apple and pear production: uneven or variable bloom. The resource sits within the program’s crop-loading and hand-thinning material and is intended to help growers recognise how flowering patterns influence fruit set, crop-load decisions and the ability to achieve a consistent marketable yield.

The wider Future Orchards® material on this topic links flowering performance with tree condition, winter chill, biennial bearing, nutrition, pollination and seasonal weather. Uneven flowering can complicate chemical thinning and hand-thinning decisions because fruitlets may be at different stages of development across the same block. Recognising this variation early allows growers to adjust crop-load strategies more deliberately rather than relying on a uniform treatment across trees with different flowering intensity.

For orchard managers, the webinar is most useful as part of a broader monitoring approach: assess flowering intensity and uniformity, compare the block with its previous-season crop and tree condition, and use that information when setting fruit-number targets and thinning strategies.
