March 2021 | Presented by Michael Crisera | Future Orchards® Goulburn Valley trial update

This trial update addresses a specific orchard question: whether Gala fruit maturity differs between blocks managed with overhead irrigation and comparable Gala without overhead irrigation. The work was presented through the Future Orchards® autumn orchard-walk program in the Goulburn Valley.

The value of the comparison is that overhead systems can influence orchard microclimate as well as water delivery. Any maturity response therefore needs to be interpreted alongside temperature, canopy condition, crop load, irrigation timing and block history.

The update is a demonstration resource rather than a final multi-year research conclusion. Its purpose is to show growers the measurements being taken, the observed differences at that stage of the trial and the management question that those observations raise for future seasons.

For Gala growers, the resource is most useful as a prompt to monitor maturity objectively and to consider whether irrigation method and orchard microclimate are contributing to differences in harvest timing or fruit condition within their own blocks.
