Tasmania trial update: Gala eating quality, Smitten® hand thinning and replant rootstocks
March 2021 | Presented by Sophie Folder | Future Orchards® Autumn Orchard Walk trial update, Tasmania
This Tasmania Future Orchards® trial update brings together three orchard demonstrations: work on Gala apple eating quality, a Smitten® hand-thinning trial, and an apple replant disease rootstock trial. The combined presentation shows how local trials can be used to answer practical questions about crop load, fruit quality and orchard establishment.
The Smitten® component focuses on hand-thinning decisions and the relationship between retained crop load and the performance of the crop. The eating-quality work considers how orchard and harvest decisions influence the consumer experience, while the replant trial examines establishment performance where new trees are planted back into orchard soils.
For growers, the value of the update is the side-by-side view of short-term crop-load management and longer-term orchard-system decisions. It demonstrates how simple replicated demonstrations and repeated measurements can build local evidence for decisions that otherwise rely heavily on experience.
