Strategic planning to maintain future quality
June 2012 | Brad Ashlin | Future Orchards® presentation
This presentation looks at strategic planning through the lens of maintaining fruit quality into the future. Rather than treating quality as an end-of-season grading issue, the resource frames it as the outcome of decisions made across orchard design, variety choice, canopy management, crop load, harvest and business investment.
The strategic-planning approach encourages growers to identify the market and quality outcomes they need, then work backwards to the orchard practices and capital decisions required to deliver them consistently. This includes recognising where ageing blocks, unsuitable systems or inconsistent management create structural barriers to quality.
For orchard businesses, the presentation is a reminder that technical and financial planning should be linked. Redevelopment, labour systems, production targets and quality specifications all compete for capital. A clear long-term plan helps prioritise investment and reduces the risk of making short-term changes that improve one measure while weakening the overall business or future market position.
