Crop load and growth management

2014 | Kevin Dodds, NSW DPI | Future Orchards® demonstration report

This Jilba Orchard demonstration combined two linked management questions: whether simple, repeatable pruning rules could improve canopy performance and how root pruning might be used after severe spring frost to help restrain excessive vegetative growth.

The pruning component focused on reducing unnecessary wood, improving light penetration and setting up a more manageable canopy for future crops. The post-frost component addressed a common consequence of heavy crop loss: when fruit numbers collapse, vegetative growth can surge and the orchard can move towards a difficult biennial-bearing cycle.

Root pruning was included as one of the tools available to slow that vigour. The report therefore links winter pruning, crop-load management and root pruning rather than treating them as isolated operations. The broader lesson is to respond to frost damage with a coordinated canopy and crop strategy so that the following season is not compromised by excess growth and poor return bloom.
