Irrigation and water

June 2013 | AgFirst | Future Orchards® water-budget case study

This case study applies water-budget principles to a commercial orchard situation, showing how rainfall, irrigation and estimated crop water use can be brought together to assess whether a block is receiving enough water through the season.

The value of the case-study format is that it turns irrigation theory into a management calculation. By expressing inputs and crop demand in comparable units, growers can identify periods of deficit or excess and use the result alongside soil-moisture information to adjust scheduling.

The resource is intended as a practical decision aid: water budgeting does not replace field monitoring, but it provides an independent check on whether irrigation run times and system output are plausible for the crop, canopy and seasonal weather.
