Crop load and growth management

2014 | Paul James, Lenswood Co-operative | Future Orchards® presentation

This presentation documents the 2013–14 root-ripping work at Oakleigh Orchard in Lenswood, South Australia. It accompanies the broader Future Orchards® trial program exploring root pruning as a means of moderating strong vegetative growth in productive apple blocks.

The slides set out the field treatment and orchard context, showing how a physical cut through part of the root zone can temporarily reduce tree vigour. The intended management outcome is a more open, better illuminated canopy with less competition between shoot growth and fruit development. In practical terms, growers are looking for improvements in fruit exposure, colour and labour efficiency without compromising yield potential.

Because the treatment response depends heavily on soil type, irrigation, tree vigour and timing, the resource is most useful as a case study rather than a universal prescription. It gives growers a visual reference for how root ripping was applied in a commercial Lenswood orchard.
