September 2020 | Presented by Dirk van Hees, Fruitconsult | Future Orchards® Pear Masterclass

Dirk van Hees focuses on fertilisation strategies for pears and stresses that pear nutrition should not simply copy an apple program. Pears can respond differently to nutrient supply and are particularly sensitive to shortages of nutrients such as potassium and iron, making diagnosis and timing important parts of a fertiliser plan.

The session is organised around three practical tools: winter fertilisation, leaf fertilisation and fertigation. Each has a different role and timing, and their value depends on soil conditions, tree demand, irrigation system and the nutritional status of the block. The aim is to supply nutrients where they support growth, fruit development and return bloom without driving unwanted vigour.

As with the other 2020 Pear Masterclass sessions, European experience is presented for discussion in an Australian context. This encourages growers to interpret recommendations through local soil, water, variety and climate conditions rather than applying rates mechanically.

The slides and recording provide a useful framework for reviewing a pear nutrition program. Regular observation and testing are central: fertiliser decisions should respond to tree performance and measured need, with attention to nutrient balance, timing and the interaction between nutrition and irrigation.
