Pear Masterclass Session 2: Insights from South AfricaResearch & Extension
Grab your virtual passport: Session 2 of APAL’s virtual Pear Masterclass is heading overseas to South Africa.
Travel with us on 13 October for a virtual walk through South African pear orchards to see and hear what growers are planning in their orchard right now.
Led by specialists from TopFruit, including Pome Fruit Manager Peter Allderman, this webinar will offer insights into how other pear growers of the Southern Hemisphere are preparing for the season ahead.
Rose Daniel, APAL Technical Manager, said the South African perspective on pears would be particularly valuable for Australian growers.
“We’re excited to be able to bring these international insights into our 2021 Pear Masterclass, following the great reception we had to last year’s virtual events,” Rose said.
“The South African growers are in a similar seasonal schedule to Australian growers, but they’re also managing some very different varieties, consumer demands and a strong export market.”
Register for this session to learn more about the differences between the top varieties grown in South Africa including Forelle (Corella in Australia), Abate Fetel and Packham’s Triumph, including:
- Setting harvest targets
- Tree structures
- Pruning and managing fruiting wood,
- Light management
