Orchard management and production

October 2021 | Future Orchards® Pear Masterclass 2021 | International Pear-spectives – South Africa

This international Pear-spectives session gives Australian growers a view of pear production in South Africa. It forms part of the 2021 Pear Masterclass series and is intended to broaden the comparison beyond Australian regions, showing how growers elsewhere manage similar biological and commercial challenges under different conditions.

The value of the session lies in identifying transferable principles rather than copying a complete system. Variety choice, rootstock, tree vigour, canopy structure, crop load, irrigation and labour all interact with climate and market requirements. Practices that work in South Africa therefore provide useful reference points, but still need to be tested against Australian conditions.

International benchmarking is particularly useful where pear industries face common pressures such as controlling tree growth, maintaining regular cropping, improving fruit quality and making orchard work more efficient. Seeing how another production region addresses those pressures can help growers frame new trials or question established assumptions.

Used alongside the South Australian and Goulburn Valley Pear-spectives, the video supports structured comparison. Growers can identify common management objectives, note important regional differences and decide which ideas are worth evaluating in their own orchard.
