National Plant Biosecurity Strategy released
The 2021 – 2031 National Plant Biosecurity Strategy was released during April 2022 by Plant Health Australia. The strategy provides a framework to strengthen Australia’s plant biosecurity system over the next decade.
Development of the new strategy was informed through consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, including APAL, government, other plant industry bodies as well as environmental and community groups.
This second-generation strategy outlines four focus areas needed to build a resilient and contemporary national plant biosecurity system that will continue to support Australian plant industries, economy, environment and communities.
The updated National Plant Biosecurity Strategy is designed to inform investment across all aspects of the biosecurity system, guide efforts to address key priorities and effectively address current and future biosecurity challenges. It builds upon the achievements of the 2010-2020 while remaining agile and responsive to the changing biosecurity environment over the next decade through a process of regular monitoring, review and reporting against goals and actions.
The strategy will be overseen by a National Plant Biosecurity Implementation Group that will be coordinated by Plant Health Australia and funded by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE).
The National Plant Biosecurity Strategy follows the release late last year of national sub-strategies and implementation plans on preparedness, surveillance and diagnostics that sit under the National Plant Biosecurity Strategy and support its implementation.
