My Orchard Walk – WA apple breeding program updates
WA apple growers will visit the DPIRD Apple breeding stage 2 block for the in-orchard part of the Autumn Future Orchards® walk this Thursday 18 March, with a jam-packed agenda featuring updates on key local research and apple breeding programs.
Local Future Orchards® FLA Susie Murphy-White said it is exciting to see the breeding block at this time of year, most of the new varieties being bred have apples on the tree and some have just reached maturity, which makes it a great time to taste-test and discuss the potential these apples could have in the industry.
“It’s not very often that growers get to go behind the double gates in stage 2 and assess the potential for new WA bred apples. There are some really exciting new varieties emerging from the breeding program here in Manjimup and it’s the perfect time of year to see fruit in the orchard,” said Susie.
“Our guest speaker Dario Stefanelli is not new to the Pome Industry, but has recently moved to Manjimup to take on the Senior Research Scientist role with DPIRD. Dario will enlighten us all into the research into the Pome Industry in WA and what he has previously done in the PIPS2 biennial bearing project,” said Susie.
