Monitor block data – Batlow, New South Wales
March 2007 | Future Orchards® Orchard Walk notes | Batlow, New South Wales
These Future Orchards® notes demonstrate the program’s early approach to monitoring commercial orchard blocks in Batlow, New South Wales. Block-level information was collected so growers could compare orchard systems using measurable production and business indicators.
The Future Orchards database recorded characteristics such as variety, rootstock, planting density, tree age and replant status alongside production and profitability information where available. This made it possible to compare blocks that looked similar in the field but delivered very different commercial results.
For growers, the purpose of monitoring was not simply to build a database. The information was intended to support questions about why certain blocks produced more marketable fruit, reached full production sooner or generated stronger returns, and which management or structural differences might explain the result.
The Batlow notes are an early example of the “measure, manage, improve” approach that became central to Future Orchards®. They show how consistent block data can provide a foundation for benchmarking, orchard walks and more objective redevelopment decisions.
