2017 | Stephen Tancred, Orchard Services | Future Orchards® 2016–17 Queensland trial report

Mealy bugs can be difficult to manage once colonies are protected in sheltered parts of the tree or fruit cluster. This Queensland Future Orchards® trial report by Stephen Tancred examines control options under commercial orchard conditions and contributes practical field evidence to pest-management decisions.

The trial is relevant to growers considering how product choice, application timing and spray coverage affect control. Mealy bug management also benefits from early detection because established infestations can be harder to reach and may contaminate fruit even when populations are not obvious from a distance.

The report should be used with current registrations and IPM advice, but its broader lesson remains useful: monitor carefully, target vulnerable stages and evaluate treatments by the level of commercially meaningful control they achieve, not simply by whether a spray has been applied.

For library users, this resource is most useful as a record of the technical thinking and field evidence available at the time. Product registrations, resistance advice and regional pest pressure can change, so any present-day control decision should be checked against current labels and local recommendations while retaining the monitoring and decision-making principles described here.
