Fruit quality and harvest management

February 2007 | Prepared by Dr Terence Robinson | Future Orchards® technical notes

Fruit size is a major driver of market value in Gala, but large fruit must be achieved without sacrificing colour, firmness or return bloom. In this February 2007 Future Orchards® resource, Dr Terence Robinson focuses on the orchard factors that determine Gala fruit size and the management choices that can shift the final size distribution.

The resource places crop load at the centre of fruit-size management. The number of fruit carried by each tree determines the competition for carbohydrates and water, so early and effective thinning is critical. Tree vigour, canopy light interception, leaf area, irrigation and nutrition also influence the tree’s capacity to support fruit growth.

Robinson’s approach is consistent with precision crop-load management: establish realistic yield targets, convert those targets into fruit numbers, and intervene early enough for the remaining fruit to benefit. Fruit growth monitoring through the season can then be used to assess whether the block remains on track for the intended market size.

For Gala growers, the notes provide a framework for treating fruit size as a planned outcome rather than something assessed only at harvest. The emphasis is on aligning crop load, canopy function and seasonal management with a defined size target.
