Growth effects of GA applications on Kanzi trees – trial outline
2014 | Paul James, Lenswood Co-operative | Future Orchards® trial outline
This trial outline sets out a South Australian demonstration on the growth effects of gibberellic acid (GA) applications on young Kanzi® trees at Mt Lofty. The management question was whether GA could be used to improve extension growth and canopy development during orchard establishment.
The outline provides the experimental framework rather than a retrospective result. It defines the treatment concept, the young-tree growth objective and the measurements required to judge whether the response is commercially meaningful. This distinction is important: an outline records what the trial intends to test and should not be read as proof that the treatment worked.
APAL’s later summary of Future Orchards® trials reported that GA3 improved extension growth and canopy development in young Kanzi trees on M26 rootstock in South Australia. Growers considering similar treatments should pay attention to tree vigour, rootstock, crop load, solution pH, timing and the risk of encouraging growth that cannot be supported by irrigation and nutrition.
