Govt prioritises apple and pear industry to help get a fair deal
NewsMinister for Agriculture and Northern Australia, David Littleproud, today announced the Coalition Government would be backing fairer prices for horticulture growers through funding totalling $1.75 million to improve market transparency and bargaining power for the industry.
APAL Head of Government Relations and Advocacy, Jeremy Griffith, said this is a welcome announcement for the apple and pear industry.
“We are very pleased the Federal Government has recognised that growers are not getting a fair price their apple and pears,” Jeremy said.
“It has been one of the toughest seasons on record and growers are not being able to cover their basic costs.
“Undertaking a cost of production study, will help buyers and consumers better understand the true cost of production and hopefully assist in ensuring sustainable long-term pricing.
“Also, by prioritising the apple and pear industry sends a strong signal that our industry in particular is struggling.”
