We’re back in Orchard, come join us!

We’re finally back in orchard for the APAL Future Orchards® Walks and will be joined in-person by South African pome fruit specialists:

  • Willie Kotze – Technical Advisor Pome Fruit – Dutoit Agri,
  • Peter Allderman – Pome Fruit Manager Intellectual Property Manager – TopFruit,
  • Dr Nigel Cook – Crop Physiologist – Phrophyta,

As well as New Zealand AgFirst consultants, Craig Hornblow and Ross Wilson. 

Hosted across eight orchards throughout June, the Winter Series will focus on:

  • Reviewing the past season’s crop and setting targets for the coming season
  • Techniques, inputs and systems to address production targets locally
  • Technical advances and best tree management techniques to help you make decisions that are practical, sustainable and profitable

The Winter Series will also include a Pear Orchard Walk in the Goulburn Valley to discuss inputs and management options for producing first-class pears.

Hosted by Barolli Orchards, you will have the opportunity to see and discuss new trees planted after the 2019-2020 bushfires, as well as mature central-leader Rosy Glow and Gala and the red-fleshed apple variety RedMoon®

Hosted Silver Orchards, the Northern Victoria Goulburn Valley Orchard Walk will review the recent harvest, discuss targets for the coming season, identifying and discussing inputs that are required to meet those targets. There will also be an opportunity to discuss a range of management inputs, including crop protection, soil health management, leaf blowers and vigour control.

Friday 17 June, Pear Orchard Walk

Hosted by Oakleigh Orchards, the South Australian Orchard Walk and will feature a review of previous season’s crops and planning targets for the coming season, a discussion around proprietary varieties and managing tree canopy and fruit quality in older trees.

TASMANIA

Thursday 23 June, starting from Paramatta Creek Orchard,

Time: 10:30 – 2:30pm

Address: 7218 Bass Highway, Sassafrass, Tasmania.

With Ross Wilson, Peter Allderman and Dr Nigel Cook.

The Northern Tasmania Orchard Walk will be hosted by two of Tasmania’s Community Orchard Group members. The Orchard Walk will commence from Paramatta Creek Orchard (10:30 – midday).

Growers are then invited to make their own way to RW Squibb and Sons (1:00pm – 2:30pm at 26 Shefield Road, Spreyton).

During the Orchard Walk you will see and discuss using this season’s crop and using data to set targets for the coming season, managing trees planted into less than ideal conditions (soil, wildlife) on different systems, soil conditions, rootstocks and vigour, filling canopies for production gains, and much more.

Friday 24 June, Sanders Orchard

Hosted by Sanders Orchard, this Orchard Walk will review the most recent harvest outcomes, setting targets for the coming season and inputs options to meet those targets, different orchard systems and varieties, and optimising pruning times for profitability.
