Crop load and growth management

November 2012 | Australian Fruitgrower article | Future Orchards®

This Australian Fruitgrower resource connects crop-load decisions made earlier in the season with the efficiency and quality of harvest. An orchard carrying the right number of fruit is easier to pick because fruit size, colour and maturity are more uniform and fewer low-value fruit need to be handled.

Crop loading is not simply a yield decision. Too many fruit can reduce size, colour and return bloom, while too few fruit leave productive capacity unused. Setting a target requires growers to consider canopy capacity, variety, market specifications and previous block performance, then convert the target into fruit numbers that can be checked after thinning.

A well-set crop reduces the need for complicated harvest decisions and can shorten the number of picks required. The article reinforces the Future Orchards principle that a successful harvest is largely created earlier in the season through disciplined crop-load management.
