June 2014 | Presented by Peter Sanders, Three Bridges Orchard | Future Orchards® grower case study

Peter Sanders uses the Three Bridges Orchard experience to show how grower learning, outside expertise and disciplined observation can be turned into practical orchard improvement. The presentation sits within the Future Orchards® grower case-study series and encourages growers to test their own assumptions against the experience of advisers, researchers and other commercial orchards.

A central message is that useful change comes from combining expert input with the realities of an individual block. Rather than copying a system without context, growers are encouraged to look closely at tree performance, marketable yield, canopy behaviour, labour requirements and the financial result, then adapt ideas to their own orchard conditions.

The presentation is particularly useful as an extension resource because it frames learning as an ongoing management process. Benchmarking, measuring and reviewing results make it easier to separate changes that genuinely improve performance from those that add cost or complexity without delivering a return.

For growers reviewing orchard strategy, the resource is a reminder to use specialists and peer networks as inputs to decision-making, while retaining clear targets for quality, production and profitability at block level.
