June 2013 | AgFirst | Future Orchards® grower case study

This case study uses Oakleigh Orchards to examine the management requirements behind very high apple yields, expressed through the benchmark of 100 tonnes per hectare. The focus is not on yield as a stand-alone number but on the orchard structure, light environment, crop load, fruit quality and consistency required to make high production commercially worthwhile.

High yields are only valuable when the crop meets market specifications and can be produced without exhausting the tree or creating excessive labour and input costs. The case-study format therefore encourages growers to look at marketable yield, not simply gross tonnage, and to connect canopy design and pruning with bud quality, fruit positioning and repeatable cropping.

For growers benchmarking their own blocks, the resource is useful because it turns an ambitious production target into a management discussion. The relevant question is not “can this orchard produce 100 t/ha?” but “what tree, canopy, crop-load, labour and quality conditions must be in place for a high yield to generate sustainable profit?”
