Tools to measure nitrogen status in apple leaves
April 2022 | Kevin Dodds, NSW DPI | Future Orchards® trial report
This Batlow trial examined practical tools for measuring nitrogen status in apple leaves. Nitrogen management is a balance: insufficient supply can limit canopy and crop performance, while excessive nitrogen can promote unwanted vigour and affect fruit quality and colour.
The trial’s purpose was to assess whether additional or more rapid measurement tools could help growers interpret tree nitrogen status alongside established laboratory leaf analysis and orchard observations.
For practical use, any nitrogen-status tool needs to be interpreted in context. Variety, crop load, shoot growth, irrigation, timing of sampling and recent fertiliser applications can all influence the reading and the management decision that follows.
The report contributes to a wider Future Orchards® emphasis on objective orchard management – using measurements to refine nutrition rather than relying only on visual impressions or fixed fertiliser programs.
