November 2017 | Yvette Jones, AgFirst | Future Orchards® Focus Orchard and trial update

This South Australian update records progress in the regional Future Orchards® Focus Orchard program. The model placed applied trials in commercial orchards so that management ideas could be tested under real production conditions and discussed directly with growers.

The document captures a stage in the trial process: the question being addressed, the orchard context, observations to date and the measurements being used to judge whether the treatment or management change is worthwhile.

For readers, the report is most useful when compared with earlier and later South Australian updates. Changes in seasonal conditions, canopy development and crop response can alter the meaning of a single-season observation, so the series provides better context than any one snapshot alone.

The report also illustrates the extension role of the Focus Orchard program – generating practical evidence locally, then using orchard walks and written summaries to move that learning through the wider industry.
