June 2009 | Prepared by AgFirst | Future Orchards® Orchard Walk notes

Effective pollination is a foundation for reliable fruit set, seed development and fruit shape in apples and pears. These Future Orchards® notes review the practical requirements for achieving good cross-pollination in commercial pipfruit orchards.

The resource considers flowering overlap between varieties, the availability and placement of compatible pollen sources, bee activity and the effect of orchard conditions during bloom. It reinforces that pollination is a system involving cultivar compatibility, flower density, pollinator numbers, weather and orchard layout rather than a single-input decision.

For growers, the practical focus is on planning pollinisers and bee activity before bloom, checking whether bloom timing and bee movement are adequate, and using observations of fruit set and seed development to assess whether the pollination strategy is working.
