Orchard management and production

2019 | Paul James | Future Orchards® trial report

This South Australian trial report examines leader-height management in high-density apple orchards. The work addresses a common management issue in intensive systems: how to control the top of the canopy without creating excessive vigour, shading or a difficult-to-manage tree structure.

The trial compares approaches to managing the leader and considers their effects on canopy behaviour and fruit production. The practical objective is to maintain a productive wall of fruiting wood at a height that supports good light distribution and efficient orchard operations.

For growers, the report is most relevant when deciding how and when to contain mature tree height in intensive plantings, particularly where pruning response, fruit colour and labour access are important considerations.
