Labour efficiency
November 2010 | AgFirst | Future Orchards® Orchard Walk notes
Labour efficiency has a direct effect on orchard cost of production, especially for highly manual operations such as pruning, thinning and harvest. This Future Orchards® resource provides a practical framework for identifying where labour time is being used and where orchard systems can be simplified.
The notes encourage growers to look beyond total wage cost and examine labour productivity at block and task level. Travel time, ladder movement, fruit handling, canopy access, crew supervision and the number of separate passes through a block can all add cost without adding value.
A recurring theme is that efficient labour begins with the orchard system itself. Narrow, accessible canopies and clear work standards make it easier for crews to perform tasks consistently and create a better foundation for platforms or other mechanical aids.
The resource is useful as a prompt for growers to record labour inputs, compare blocks and question long-established work practices. Incremental improvements in seconds per tree or bins per picker can compound into meaningful whole-orchard gains.
