August 2017 | Future Orchards® trial | Adelaide Hills | Contact: Paul James

This Adelaide Hills trial tested whether the dormancy-breaking product Erger™ could alter the timing and uniformity of flowering in Alvina Gala. Applications were planned at different intervals before anticipated green tip, although weather meant the final spray dates were 27 July, 4 August, 8 August, 13 August and 20 August 2016.

All Erger™ treatments advanced and compressed flower development compared with the untreated control. Most treatments also advanced green tip and full bloom, with the latest 20 August treatment showing less effect. Fruit maturity, fruit size and yield were followed through harvest to assess whether changes in flowering translated into commercial differences.

Average fruit size was broadly similar, although treatment means ranged by about 4.4 mm. The report concluded that Erger™ could advance and condense flowering but that the best application timing would vary by variety and weather. It recommends further local experience before growers rely on the product as a routine flowering-management tool.
