Crop load and growth management

26 May 2014 | Prepared by Virginie Grégoire, Fruit Growers Victoria | Future Orchards® trial report

This Future Orchards® trial at Lardner, Victoria, examines the crop load that young Pink Lady® trees can carry while still developing the canopy needed for future production. The work sits at the intersection of early cropping and orchard establishment: too little crop delays returns, while too much crop can restrict extension growth and slow canopy fill.

The trial uses measurable crop-load and tree-development indicators rather than relying on visual impressions alone. By comparing tree growth and cropping under different load levels, the report helps growers assess how early fruiting affects the longer-term productive structure of young Pink Lady plantings.

The practical value is in balancing short-term harvest income against future yield potential. For new plantings, crop-load targets should be set in the context of tree strength, rootstock, planting density, canopy development and the orchard’s target time to full production.
