Thinning of apple fruit: mechanical fruit thinning and prediction of fruit drop
November 2025 | Presented by Sarah Gruntmeir | Future Orchards® presentation and video
This Future Orchards® resource examines mechanical thinning and methods for predicting fruit drop as tools for more precise apple crop-load management. The presentation is aimed at improving the timing and confidence of thinning decisions by combining orchard observation with techniques that can reduce reliance on late, labour-intensive hand thinning.
Mechanical thinning is most useful when it is integrated into a broader crop-load strategy rather than treated as a stand-alone operation. Flower density, tree vigour, variety, target yield, weather and the response of fruitlets after thinning all influence the final crop. Prediction of fruit drop helps growers determine whether the first thinning action has been sufficient or whether additional intervention is needed.
For orchard managers, the practical value is earlier decision-making. Removing excess reproductive load early can support fruit size, colour and return bloom while reducing the amount of fruit that must be removed later in the season. The slides and video should be considered together for the full explanation of the techniques and decision points.
